Aquatic Anticipation: BioShock 2

Please join the Big Kids Table in welcoming another new writer to the fold, Beth Clark. This week she's bringing us a quick glimpse into the upcoming BioShock 2 game. If you like what you read or you're just as excited as we are about BioShock 2 let us know in the comments.

BioShock is a game that you don’t even need to be playing yourself to enjoy. It has visuals so detailed, and a story so compelling, that it sucks you in like a great movie. It was so good, in fact, that last year my friends and I had weekly “BioShock” Fridays that consisted of six of us crowded on a futon watching one person play through the game, all while shouting directions and suggestions. When I saw the BioShock figurines at Comic-Con, complete with a glowing Eve in a hypodermic needle, I just about peed my pants with joy.

As you can imagine, the news that the release of BioShock 2 was delayed from November 2009 release until early 2010 just about crushed me. I wasn’t the only one that took the news hard. Take-Two Interactive Software, the developers of BioShock 2, saw their stock drop 12% after the announcement.

But all isn't lost. The developers say the delay is to make it all the better for us. This time we are 10 years in the future from the last game and we get to play as the Prototype Big Daddy. The mystery is, just who is this predecessor to the giant guardians of the “Little Sisters” from the first BioShock. With new plasmids to play with, and a rivet gun to wield, you can be assured a lot of fun finding out the answers to these questions, while delving deep into a fantastic storyline.

A multi-player option is also being developed for BioShock 2. This will take place in a totally different storyline that takes place prior to the events of the first game. This gives you essentially two games for the price of one. Players will take the roll of “Test subjects” for plasmids while getting to explore the city of Rapture in her glory days. In fact, pre-ordering the game at GameStop will get you a bonus two characters to play with your buddies in the multi-player mode.

So is the delay in releasing BioShock 2 worth it? I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve played but with two new stories, and the option to play with my friends, the game seems to offer as much excitement and thrills as the first time you shoot up with a plasmid.
