Trailer Round-Up

I'm trying to start doing some regular weekly segments. The first one is going to look at new and noteworthy trailers that have come out on the internets, and I'm calling it the Trailer Round-Up. This week it's all about a dancing fox, sad dolphins, and an angry football fan.

The first trailer this week is for Wes Anderson's new film, Fantastic Mr. Fox. It has Wes Anderson's usual cast of characters, but adds a newcomer to the group in George Clooney. What's not usual about this movie is that it's stop-motion animated. It's a style similar to the Rankin and Bass classics we all grew up with, like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I think the cast is fantastic, the animation looks fantastic, but the trailer makes the voice overs look bad. This is something that happens typically in trailers, but I think it's more noticeable with this style of animation. Kind of like watching a bad dub on a kung-fu flick, not good. Other than that little quibble I think this will be fun for kids and nostalgic adults. Plus I am interested to see Wes Anderson step out of his usual comfort zone. I'll be interested to see what the critics say before the movie comes out this November.

The second trailer this week is for a documentary coming out of Sundance this year called The Cove. If you are a fan of the show Whale Wars on Animal Planet then this movie is for you. It's kind of a spy movie with an environmentalist angle, with a little investigative journalism thrown in for effect. Like if Captain Planet, James Bond and Michael Moore had a baby, The Cove would be it. It looks very interesting to me and I usually don't get that excited for documentaries. While this movie might not get a wide release, I think it's worth seeking out if it's playing nearby. If dolphins don't get you excited, Hayden Panettiere is in this too. It's out now so go for her, stay for the dolphins.

Last but not least is a film from the writer of The Wrestler about a hard core football fan and the trouble he goes through to be a fan. Everyone knows Patton Oswalt for his comedy, or as the voice of Remy in Ratatouille, but this could be his best role yet. I wasn't expecting much going in to this trailer but I finished it wanted more. It looks intense for sure. Look for this one to be in limited release in New York and Philadelphia soon. If you want bonus points, paint yourself in your favorite teams colors when you go.

That's it for the round-up this week. As always tell me what you think of thses trailers in the comments. And if you see a trailer this week that you want to add to next weeks round-up, please let me know.
